In this residential care centre, an increase in Legionella contamination was detected during an annual water inspection. This rising trend could not be stopped, despite better temperature control of the water and regular flushing of the pipes.

Automated Legionella prevention in a residential care centre

This care facility houses 150 people, the building dates from 1999. The critical points in this care facility were the length of the pipes and the inadequate insulation of the water pipes.

We were called to this project because of a rising trend in Legionella that was detected during annual water analyses. This increase indicated a growth of the biofilm in the pipes, which was not completely removed by flushing.

During an initial analysis, the long distances stood out and we saw that certain branches, such as the staff showers, were rarely used. This stagnant and slow-flowing water created a permanent source of contamination.

Moreover, we found that the temperature on the return system of the hot water pipe was not high enough and that the cold water pipe in the ceiling was not cold enough. As a solution, we installed a Konax® Easydis here, which provides automatic dosing of the disinfectant.

Given the complexity and length of the pipes, several injection points were provided on the hot water pipe. Thanks to these multiple injection points, low dosing is possible with the guarantee that sufficient active disinfectant is present everywhere.

All injection points are monitored with inline sensors. This data, together with the water consumption, is forwarded for monitoring to our Konax IoT platform.
