Disinfection of wastewater from the laboratory

The laboratory with associated animal housing facilities has biosafety level BSL-3. The effluent, coming from sinks and emergency showers in the changing rooms, is potentially contaminated with the pathogenic micro-organisms studied in the lab. Consequently, this wastewater must be disinfected before discharge.

The wastewater is pumped to a storage tank of 1000 L. The full capacity is rarely used and this is the capacity needed to store all effluent from showers and sinks for a longer period in the event of a worst-case scenario.

As soon as 100 L of wastewater has been filled in the storage tank, this 100 L is pumped over to a second tank. In this tank, the effluent is mixed with a specific amount of EasyDis 2000, where it remains in contact long enough before being discharged.

The system is equipped with numerous safety measures so that untreated, contaminated effluent can never be discharged directly.

The batch reactor (which generates the disinfection product EasyDis 2000) is controlled by a custom-made Konax Prodis with adapted software. The operation of this installation can be monitored remotely, as it is equipped with a modem that, via a fixed LAN connection, is in contact with the customer's central management system and the online Konax IoT platform.
